The Pursuit of Happiness

It seems as though Happiness is the primary right the Declaration of Independence seeks to safeguard. It is mentioned twice. Once as a stated unalienable right and second as the purpose, along with Safety, of Government. For me on this 4th of July it begs the question, Why are so many of us unhappy? Why haven't we found Happiness with a capital H? Actually, perhaps I better personalize that, would I deem myself Happy? Probably not.

Rather than expound on the meaning of Happiness and the means to attain it. I have decided to list what makes me happy. Even before I write the first item I know this list is endless and just the thought of a never-ending list of happiness makes me happy.

Smiling and being smiled at
Singing
Dancing
Walking
The myriad shades of green on a spring day
The way the light plays on my window through the maple leaves
The smell of coffee brewing
Music of almost any kind especially the ladies that play the piano in the lobby in the morning
White sheets
Playing a game with anyone
Reading
Writing
Learning
Talking about ideas
A hot shower
A cool dip
Food, textures, spices, temperatures, freshness
Making food to share
Red wine
Crying at a good movie
Laughing out loud at a joke or a funny situation
Touching
Kissing and all the rest
Good and Plenty
The smell of bread baking
Sun warming me when it is still chilly out
Sun coming through a window in the winter
Sun in the morning
Color
History
Swimming
Talking out loud under water

You know what is amazing about this list? It really could go on forever and everything feels equal. Each line elicits in me a tiny shiver of excitement. And looking at the list and imagining more lines leads me to believe that what makes me happy is sensory and sharing ideas. I'm happy about that.
