K is for Katzenjammer

There are not a lot of k words. Only five spreads, 10 pages in Merriam-Webster's collegiate dictionary, and a lot of them are proper nouns. It literally means cats in distress and what do you think they sound like. Yep. Not pleasant at all. Germans are famous for compound words. Of course you all know kindergarten which could count for this entry too. So, let me tell you a kindergarten story that caused a katzenjammer.

When I was in kindergarten my family owned one car. Every morning we would all pile in and head to my babysitter Verona's house. I would stay there until school started. My dad walked from Verona's to the junior high he taught in and my mom drove to work.

Once when standing in the doorway at Verona's my dad said, "Bev, can I have a couple bucks?"

"Don't give him the money mom," I declared. "He'll just spend it on beer."

Katzenjammer ensued.
