Born to lead and influence

Mary Margaret graduated from college this weekend. After only three years, she finished her bachelor's of science in social work. What's more, she graduated magna cum laude with a 3.89 grade point average. These stats clearly indicate she is smart, diligent, driven, motivated, and very hard working. (Oh no! Perhaps she has inherited my addiction for work!) What these facts don't reveal are her compassion, sense of justice, largesse, biting sense of humor, and her loyalty to friends and family. She is a remarkable girl, OK, woman. And yes, I am not without bias, however Mary is simply a lovely person and I admire her ability to be herself.

This weekend, as she moved from student to adult, I was surprised by my feelings of exuberance and excitement for her future. Oh sure, I had a few moments in which I felt tears sting my eyes but they were mostly about me, mourning my young womanhood long past. For Mary, I am nearly giddy with excitement. I believe she will fulfill the mission set forth by her college, to educate women to lead and influence.

Just in case my other children read this, and I know you do. You are held in equal esteem in my heart and my mind. I'll focus on each of you another day. This was Mary's weekend.
